Biancane Nature Park

Biancane Nature Park is a natural area near the center of Monterotondo Marittimo, in the province of Grosseto, in which are located the characteristics “biancane”.
The name derives from the white colour of the rocks that characterizes and contrasts with the surrounding landscape; in fact, the hydrogen sulphide emissions cause a chemical reaction with the limestone turning it into gypsum.
You can follow a guided tour, wearing trekking shoes, and be fascinated by numerous natural geothermal events; you have the presence of different types of geothermal events such as steam leaks from the ground, putizze and fumaroles.
The suggestive colours that the soil and flora have taken on, together with the constant water vapour that comes out of the rocks, give the impression of being on another planet.
How to get to Biancane Nature Park?
To go to the Biancane Nature Park, once in Monterotondo, you have to turn into the road that leads to the Lagoni village, the intersection from which the road originates is located on the provincial road to Suvereto located about 150 meters from the square, in the direction of Suvereto, following the signs for the “Parco delle Biancane”. Once you have taken the road, after about a hundred meters you can already see evident vapor leaks in the retaining wall on the right; you have arrived at your destination.
