The Tumulus Tomb in the Borgo
An Etruscan masterpiece between history and architecture: details of a unique tumulus tomb in the Vetulon area
The tomb, built of dry-laid Alberese stones, consists of a dromos facing W10, characterized by stone parapets present only for a short distance, and a quadrangular burial chamber (about 2.25 x 2.56 m). The latter was probably equipped with a stone platform along the southern side. The entrance to the chamber is defined on both sides by monolithic jambs and was originally sealed by a sandstone slab, which was found fragmented during excavations.
The mound is surrounded by a drum, of which the lower two rows remain visible. The roof, which has been lost, was most likely of the pseudocupola type. Also discovered next to the mound was a 'cap' cippus, a typical element of the Vetulonian area, datable between the mid-7th and mid-6th centuries BCE.
