What to see in Punta Ala: the jewel of the Maremma, right on our doorstep
Looking for information on what to see in Punta Ala during your vacation? If you’re staying at Borgo Etrusco, you’re in a prime location. In less than 20 minutes, you can go from the tranquility of our Mediterranean scrub to the elegance of one of Tuscany’s most renowned resorts.
Punta Ala isn’t just a famous port—it’s a place where nature, history, and breathtaking views come together. Here are our tips for an unforgettable day.
The Harbor and the Waterfront: the heart of Punta Ala
You simply must start your visit at the marina. Here you can admire dream yachts and enjoy a stroll past elegant boutiques and cafés. What’s more, it was right here that the legend of Luna Rossa first set sail.
🗝️ The Board of Directors
“If you want to experience the true magic of Punta Ala, don’t just stop at the shops along the harbor. Hop in the car and drive up toward the castle. Pull over at the scenic overlook just before the gate: from there, the sun sets right behind the Isolotto dello Sparviero. It’s a breathtaking moment, and believe me, it’s the most romantic spot on the entire coast.”
Beaches and Unspoiled Nature
If you're wondering what to see in Punta Ala to relax, the answer is its pine forest. The beaches are surrounded by a forest of centuries-old pine trees that stretches almost to the water's edge.
-
Porto Beach: Perfect for an aperitif at sunset.
-
Cala del Pozzo: For those looking for a wilder, less crowded spot.
History and Views: The Castle and the Tower
Don’t forget to look up. Punta Ala Castle towers over the headland and offers an incredible view of Elba Island. Keep in mind, however, that many of these properties are private, but the view from the road is open to everyone and absolutely not to be missed.

Beaches of the Maremma: the luxury of silence and the ritual of a spring picnic
There’s a secret that only we locals know well: the beaches of the Maremma in late April and early May are true paradises on earth. While in summer they’re sought-after destinations from all over the world, in spring they return to being wild realms of sand, driftwood, and blooming Mediterranean scrub. For those staying at Borgo Etrusco, this is the ideal time to reclaim your time and enjoy the ritual of a picnic by the sea, enveloped in that Ruhe (peace) that rejuvenates the spirit.
Cala Civette: the hidden gem
If Cala Violina is the “diva,” Cala Civette is her shyer—and, in many ways, more charming—sister. Located just a few minutes from Scarlino, this bay is watched over by the ancient tower of the same name, which rises above the green promontory. In spring, the light-colored sand contrasts with the emerald green of the water in a way that seems tailor-made for a photograph. It’s the perfect place to spread out a towel, open a basket of local delicacies, and listen to nothing but the sound of the waves.
Sterpaia Park: Centuries-Old Oaks and Dunes
Continuing toward the Gulf of Follonica, Sterpaia Park offers a landscape unlike any other in Italy. Here, centuries-old oak trees reach down almost to the sand, providing natural shade that’s perfect for a day outdoors. Strolling along the shoreline at this time of year means having miles of coastline almost entirely to yourself, where the wind-sculpted tree branches become natural sculptures ready for a stunning photo.
📢 Editor's Pick: Reflections and Geometries
As a photography enthusiast, I’d like to share my favorite spot for the spring holidays. Head to Cala Civette in the early morning. The side light highlights the textures of the rocks, and the silhouette of the tower is reflected in the water, which is as smooth as a mirror. Don’t forget to frame the Mediterranean scrub flowers that reach right up to the sand: the color contrast between the yellow of the flowers and the blue of the sea is my favorite “perfect shot.”
